Full story (spoilers)
Matthew, the Snyders' biological son, returns and frames Timothy, who is thrown out. As payback to the family, and because he carries a rare gene, Timothy secretly joins Project Hail Mary, which sends one person into a thirty-year coma to look for a new planet. In the last days before the NASX launch he finishes Helena's cybernetic eyes, tests the device on himself by removing one of his own eyes, and asks the head maid, Miriam, to ship it to Doctor Chloe once he is gone. His sisters mock him, and when he is taken to hospital they accuse him of faking illness for attention, while General Ford McGee drives him through physical and mental trials in which he breaks records. Only once he has left do the Snyders see what Matthew was up to and what Timothy gave up. Thirty years on, Timothy succeeds on Planet Artemis and is praised as a hero, while his family, in mourning, lives with what its betrayal cost.
