The setup

Leonis of Thrace once ruled the fighting pits so completely that crowds called him the God of the Arena. He quit after enemies killed his wife, and he has kept that past buried ever since. The man we meet now fixes things around the gladiator school where his son's team trains, and everyone at the school looks down on him, since none of them knows who he used to be. Trouble comes when the team is on the verge of being broken up. To keep it together, Leonis signs on for the War Trials, a high-status contest, and the skill he shows in it makes people wonder about the handyman's real name.
