The setup

Rowen was expelled from the academy and now works the stables, convinced that his blood throws spirit beasts into a frenzied panic; the title tells us other people call him cursed. Rescuing a black-winged foal shows him he has had it wrong. Then the Staff of All Beasts selects him, every one of the nine Trial Pillars glows, and the family line he had lost track of is laid bare. He gradually works out that the Sacred Court is siphoning the strength out of every beast through something called Dark Pacts. ReelShort files the story under rags to riches, competition, misunderstanding and fight-the-system, and also under hidden identity and secret reveal, so the stable boy's rise runs through a trial, a revelation about who he is and a fight against an institution.
